Learn the basics, in order

New to UAE steel design? A reading order in which each step builds on the one before.

Show the 8 steps
  1. Which rules apply

Is the structure under the Dubai Building Code at all, and which codes and editions does the project name?

  2. How structures carry load and fail

Picture a reference structure, follow its load path, see where and how it fails, and why one form is chosen over another.

  3. Loads on the structure

What the structure must carry: dead, live, wind, temperature and construction loads.

  4. Stability and load paths

How loads travel to the ground, what keeps a frame upright, and how to size bracing.

  5. Serviceability

Deflection, drift, vibration, movement joints and fatigue: strong enough is not the same as good enough.

  6. Drawings, approvals and changes

What the structural calculation and the shop drawings each do.

  7. Building it

Detailing for galvanizing, coatings, fixings and movement.

How these guides work

  1. Plain answer first

Each guide opens with the question and a short answer, then the detail, worked examples, a checklist and the limits. Read as far as you need.

  2. Every rule cited

Code requirements carry a numbered note naming the document, edition, clause and page. Our own engineering explanations and advice are labelled as ours.

  3. Where it applies

Each guide names the emirate, code and edition behind it, and says plainly when the governing standard is not held.
